Hydroponically grown foods are produce grown without soil. Instead, the plants are grown in a nutritionally balanced, water-based solution full of minerals, reducing the risk of harmful pesticides and bugs that can prove problematic in normally grown produce. Additionally, hydroponic greenhouses are beneficial in regions with poor soil, enriching the diets of people who normally cannot purchase healthy, locally-grown foods; hydroponics also yield healthy, hearty crops year round, no matter the season. - Tomatoes are a top hydroponic crop because they are one of the easiest vegetables to grow hydroponically, due to their heartiness. They can survive with less maintenance than many other vegetable types, and will not stop growing when tangled. They take about 100 days to harvest, from seedling to maturity.
- According to Dr. Harry Resh, lettuce is the fourth most important hydroponically grown type of produce. Because lettuce grown hydroponically is free of dirt and bugs, it is typical in high-end restaurants and grocery stores. When sold at grocery stores, the lettuce is sometimes sold with its hydroponic growing cube still attached, allowing the lettuce to continue growing. Most hydroponic lettuce is of the bibb or European buttercrunch varieties.
- According to Dr. Resh, cucumbers are another available hydroponic product. The most commonly grown hydroponic varieties are European (Long English) cucumbers. Hydroponic cucumbers are more delicate than their soil-grown counterparts, and must be shrink-wrapped to avoid losing moisture. The cucumbers will mature in about 60 days, when grown in the ideal, hot temperature of about 80 degrees Fahrenheit with 16 hours of light a day.
- There are several varieties of bell peppers grow well in hydroponic gardening. Red pepper types include Cubico and Mazurka; orange pepper types include Fellini, Narobi and Eagle; yellow peppers include Samantha, Lesley, Kelvin, Fiesta and Gold Flam. You must vertically train the bell pepper plants using cables and strings to keep them healthy and untangled.
