Innsbruck is one of the cities hosting the Euro2008 Football cup in June next year. For people traveling to see their favorite teams battle it out on the grass, there will be many days between matches. Although it is almost customary to drink beer and cheer for your team between matches as well, getting out of your hotel for a little sightseeing can be a nice contrast to the loud crowds of football supporters.

The old town of Innsbruck

Innsbruck, and its old parts, is known for the varied architecture with Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo buildings elegantly located next to each other. As the old town is for pedestrians only, it makes for a nice and quiet walk looking at the amazing buildings.

In the old town of Innsbruck, noticeable sights are; Triumphal arc, located at Maria Theresienstrasse, St. James Cathedral with an extraordinary painting of Mary of Succor by Lucas Cranach the Elder and the amazing Golden Roof, a multi story balcony shimmering of gold. When its sunny, it sparkles in a beautiful way.

For those interested in other sports besides football, a trip to Bergisel Hill and its new ski jump slope is a must. The former Ski jump, erected in 1925, hosted the Olympic Ski Jumping competitions in 1964 and 1976 and was rebuilt in 2001-2002, and the result is an amazing sight. Standing 47 meters tall on a hill leaves you with stunning views and scenery.

The Imperial Church of Innsbruck

Housing the memorial of Emperor Maximilian I, the Imperial Church of Innsbruck is one of the most visited tombs in Europe. It is also famous for its organ, considered one of the five most impressive organs in the world.

Innsbruck also offers many museums of various natures, with something for every taste. Perhaps one of the largest collections of skulls and bones might be of interest, then a trip to the Anatomical Sciences Museum Innsbruck, is the way to go. Or, if you would like to have your ears ringing for an eternity, visit the Bell Museum and ring, ring, ring away.

The 1000 square meters large painting of the famous Battle of Bergisel in 1809 is a stunning sight, painted by Michael Zeno Diemer. For art buffs, this is a great place to visit. If you are lucky, your hotel room will give you a view of this wonderful piece of art.

Shopping for souvenirs in Innsbruck is funnier than most cities. Besides the obvious Tyrolean figurines, knives and watches, Innsbruck offers a wide selection of local specialties. Whether its food or drink, the Austrians and the people of Innsbruck, are widely known for their excellent recipes. Try some home made marmalade, apple schnapps, Austrian bacon or any of the other specialties from the Innsbruck region of Austria. Ask at your hotel for the closest store.

As most major cities in Austria, Innsbruck also offers a wide selection of regular shopping. You do not need to go to Paris, Rome or other fashion capitals to get well dressed; Shopping in Innsbruck is better than youd expect. Not only football jerseys for the Euro2008, but most known high-end brands.
