Red Valerian commonly known as Jupiter's Beard, is an attractive perennial flower which was first found in Europe and the Mediterranean, but has flourished in popularity to the extent that it can now be found in many locations around the world.
In the United States, the flower grows exceptionally well in many areas including California, Illinois, Iowa, Arkansas, Texas and Arizona.
Unlike many types of flowers, Jupiter's beard is very low maintenance as long as you plant it in favorable soil and climate.
The Red Valerian can grow up as a shrub or herb, mainly due to the type of climatic or soil conditions it finds itself in but its base is normally woody and comes with bright leaves that are about 2.
4 inches long.
The plant is noted for developing flowers rapidly and even though independent flowers are normally small-sized, they combine to form large and easily spotted inflorescences, making it easier to attract bees, butterflies and other types of insects, which allow their pollination to occur.
While the flowers of this plant are largely red in color, some varieties end up with lavender or even white flowers.
Jupiter's Beard has been found growing well in many strange locations such as urban wastelands or even roadsides as well as old walls due to the highly alkaline nature of soils in such areas.
Their fleshy taproots ensure that they are able to penetrate the soil in such places well enough to gain enough nutrients to spur their growth, as well as survive harsh weather conditions such as long periods of drought.
Their roots can also be easily uprooted by hand or with a hand fork, which comes in very handy when trying to get rid of some plants in your garden to prevent overcrowding.
Red Valerian grows well in different types of soils, as long as it gets access to ample amount of direct sunlight for effective drainage but ultimately, limy soils are the best for this type of plant.
Unfortunately, these plants have difficulty growing up in acidic soils so you should avoid them altogether if possible or mix ground limestone to the spot where you intend to plant your flowers.
However, if you live in an area which is extremely hot during the majority of the year then you should grow them in areas with access to partial shade.
Once you follow the right conditions then your efforts will start bearing fruits when your Red Valerian starts blooming during May to August, with their pleasant fragrance and beautiful flowers sure to make you feel proud of yourself.
