    • 1). Invite guests with over-the-hill party invitations created on four-by-five-inch black precut cards. Use a paper trimmer to cut a three-by-five-inch rectangle of gray cardstock and affix it to the card base with a glue stick. Use black-letter stickers or alphabet stamps and black ink to add a phrase in the center of the gray cardstock that incorporates the guest of honor's name. For example, write "John Doe Went Up the Hill...and Right Over It." Print the party details like the location, date, time and RSVP information on another three-by-five-inch rectangle of gray cardstock to affix inside the card with a glue stick.

    • 2). Decorate the room with black and gray balloons embellished with stickers like tombstones or numbers that represent the birthday honoree's age. Hang black and gray streamers across windows and doorways. Display pictures of the guest of honor around the room depicting him from birth to present day.

    • 3). Hang a piece of butcher paper across a wall with temporary adhesive. Use letter stickers or paint to add the phrase, "You're not over the hill, you're..." across the top. Let guests complete the sentence and add sentiments to the poster with colorful markers. After the party, roll the poster up and tie it with a piece of black ribbon for the guest of honor to take home as a memento.

    • 4). Serve "old-people food" like meatloaf and mashed potatoes that the over-the-hill guest of honor won't have trouble chewing with his dentures; appetizers with a lot of fiber like raw vegetables; and an assortment of dips and soft desserts like pudding or fruit-flavored gelatin in addition to a birthday cake overloaded with candles.

    • 5). Play over-the-hill games like a cane ring toss to see which team can toss the most plastic rings onto a wood cane held by a teammate. Organize a trivia quiz about the guest of honor covering topics such as her childhood, school years, family life and hobbies. Give the game winners prizes such as coupons for an early-bird special at a buffet restaurant or DVDs of movies like "The Bucket List" or "Cocoon."
