How to Build a Fire Pit With Gravel
- 1). Choose a location for the fire pit that is convenient for use and is not directly under overhanging limbs or power lines.
- 2). Clear an area on the ground by removing limbs, rocks and other debris. Determine the diameter or size of the fire pit you will be making and outline the circle with the tip of a shovel.
- 3). Remove any grass from the fire pit area. Begin along the inside edge of the fire pit outline and scoop grass and roots from the area with the shovel. Continue along the fire pit outline, then work your way to the center.
- 4). Level the ground where grass and roots were removed with a rake. Smooth the area so that it is as level as possible to form a good base.
- 5). Add 2 to 3 inches of gravel to the fire pit area. Pour bags of gravel into the area where grass was removed or shovel gravel in if it was purchased in bulk. Smooth the gravel with the rake.
- 6). Place a ring of pavers or other masonry block around the perimeter of the fire pit. Position the pavers or blocks around the edge so that they sit on the gravel. Continue stacking blocks or pavers to the desired height by alternating them so that connecting edges are staggered from one row to the next.
