    History

    • The Ram 2500 is the 3/4-ton pickup truck of the Dodge family. Larger and designed for heavier use then its smaller 1/2-ton sibling, the Ram 1500, the Ram 2500 nameplate arrived in 1994. Previous 3/4-ton Dodge Trucks were known as the Ram 250 and were manufactured from 1981 to 1993. The "big rig" styling of the Ram 2500 helped Dodge double the sales of its 3/4-ton truck.

    Types

    • The Ram 2500 was available with two variations of the 5.9-liter Cummins turbodiesel engine. The first 5.9-liter engine produced 235 horsepower at 2,700 rpm and 460 pound-feet of torque at 1,400 rpm.The second variation was a high-output model introduced for 2001. The HO 5.9-liter engine produced 245 horsepower at 2,700 rpm and a massive 505 pound-feet of torque at 1,600 rpm.

    Features

    • Ram 2500s equipped with a Cummins diesel engine had the EVAP control system removed. The Heavy Duty Installation Group, Deluxe Insulation Group and engine block heater were installed as standard equipment. Ram 2500 diesels were also equipped with a Heavy Duty Service Group. The HD Service Group included a 750-amp maintenance-free battery, 136-amp alternator and a heavy-duty cooling system for the HO 5.9-liter engine.

    Size

    • The 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel was available in several body styles, providing seating for three to six passengers. Passengers in the front seats had 40.2 inches of head room and 41 inches of leg room. The exterior of the Dodge Ram 2500 was between 224.1 and 244.1 inches in length. Curb weights were between 5,010 lbs. and 5,884 lbs.

    • When reviewing the 2001 Dodge Ram, Rick Popely of Cars.com said: "Dodge shook up the full-size pickup market in 1994 with bold styling on a new Ram that resembled the imposing appearance of a long-haul big rig. Seven years later, the Ram still looks fresh but now has the oldest design among full-size pickups." The editors at Edmunds wrote, "The heavy-duty 3/4-ton Dodge Ram 2500 boasted a muscular, rugged look that took heavy inspiration from big rigs--specifically their 'shouldered' fender design and prominent grille."
