How to Build a Worm Deck
- 1). Use a drill with a 1/4-inch drill bit to make 20 holes in the bottom of two solid-colored plastic 10 gallon storage bins. Space the holes 1/4-inch apart around the perimeter of the bottom of each bin.
- 2). Use the drill with a 1/16-inch drill bit attached to make 30 ventilation holes around the top edge of each bin. Space the holes 1-1/2-inches apart. Drill an additional 30 holes in one of the bin lids.
- 3). Cut bedding for worms out of newspaper. Use a pair of scissors to cut the newspaper into strips that are one inch wide. Fill a bucket with water and soak the newspaper strips in the bucket. Drain excess water from newspaper strips and place the moist strips in the bottom of each plastic bin. Repeat until the bottom three to four inches of each bin is covered in moist newspaper strips.
- 4). Add 1/2 pound of red worms to each bin, on top of the newspaper strips. Cut a piece of cardboard the width of the bin and place it on top of the newspaper and worms inside of one bin.
- 5). Place the lid of one bin upside down on the floor. Place four bricks on the bin lid, one at each corner. Place the bin with cardboard in it on top of the bricks. Place the second bin on top of the first and cover it with the drilled lid.
- 6). Gently bury compostable kitchen scraps like fruit, bread and vegetable leftovers in the newspaper shreds for the worms to eat and breakdown daily. Start with smaller amounts of food until the worms multiply and increase in number, which should be around two months. Remove compost from the top bin and use in your garden. Refill with new newspaper and worms from the bottom bin to continue the composting process.
