How to Safely Clean a DE Filter
- 1). Unplug the pool pump. This will ensure no electrical shock while you are performing maintenance on the DE filter.
- 2). Locate the inlet valve on the DE filter. The valve is usually found on the left side of the filter connected to the pool pump. Close the valve by pushing the lever to the "closed" position. Depending on the make of your filter, it may say "off" instead of "closed." This will prevent water from entering the filter tank during the cleaning process.
- 3). Open the waste valve, usually located on the right side of the filter near the bottom. This will allow water to drain from the filter tank. Allow the dirty water to drain completely.
- 4). Using a wrench, loosen the bolts located on the top of the filter cover. Place each bolt to the side to ensure they do not get lost. Lift the cover off the tank, and set it to the side.
- 5). Clean the inside of the DE filter. Spray the sides and bottom of the tank using a garden hose. Continue to spray the inside until the water runs clear out of the waste line.
- 6). Clean the DE filter fingers. The fingers are attached to the filter cover, and are used to catch algae and dirt. Spray the fingers with the hose until they are clear of dirt and algae. Place the cover back onto the tank. Replace each bolt, and secure them using the wrench.
- 7). Close the waste valve, and open the inlet valve. Water will begin to flow back into the tank. Once water stops flowing through the filter into the tank, the tank is full. Restore power to the pump by plugging it back in. Allow the system to pump water through the filter for two minutes.
- 8). Add the DE media to the system. Slowly pour the correct amount of media into the pool skimmer. The amount of media needed is determined by the size of your pool. Refer to the media packaging for exact amounts. Once all media is poured in, the filter is now clean and ready for use.
