Black inventors have been an important source of innovation in American and global history, and there are many types of books available detailing their work. When searching for the book that best suits your needs, it is helpful to search for titles using the term "African American" as well as "black." - Biographies of individual Black inventors are published by many companies, but may be difficult to locate for lesser known inventors. Biographies of George Washington Carver, such as "George Washington Carver: Scientist and Symbol," and other famous inventors may be easily found. "Garrett Augustus Morgan: Businessman, Inventor, Good Citizen" is another of these.
- A popular series detailing the accomplishments of African Americans is the "Black Stars" series. Two books within the series that deal with inventors are "African American Inventors" and "African American Women Scientists and Inventors." There are other series available as well.
- Written for educational purposes, scholarly texts on African American scientists and inventors are plentiful, detailed, and may be found simply by performing an internet search using keywords. These include "Black Inventors in the Age of Segregation: Granville T. Woods, Lewis H. Latimer, and Shelby J. Davidson" and "The Inventive Spirit of African Americans: Patented Ingenuity."
- Collections of biographies of famous African Americans are widely available, and often include inventors and scientists. "Black Pioneers of Science and Invention" and "Inspiring African-American Inventors: 9 Extraordinary Lives" are two examples.
