Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas, which lies near the stomach and small intestine in your dog. A working pancreas produces enzymes that allow your dog to digest food, and insulin, which metabolizes sugars. When the pancreas is not working correctly, digestion is compromised and your dog will appear ill. Left untreated, the inflammation can lead to sepsis and even death. Pancreatitis is a serious condition that requires veterinary care. - Dogs with a painful abdomen will often appear hunched.dog image by Piotr Markowski from Fotolia.com

If your dog has a painful abdomen, it may lose its appetite, eat slowly or turn down favorite treats or food. This may be a difficult symptom to catch in multi-dog households if other pets have access to your dog's food. If your consistently hearty eater is turning away from meals or if this symptom is coupled with other pancreatitis symptoms, contact your vet as soon as possible. - Vomiting and diarrhea can lead to rapid dehydraton in a dog.dog image by Erg??n ?--zsoy from Fotolia.com
Dogs that suffer from pancreatitis may suffer from bouts of vomiting food, water or bile. They may also have diarrhea that has a greasy consistency and an extremely bad odor. If your dog is vomiting, has diarrhea and is also turning away food, it is at risk for dehydration, which can further complicate the condition. - A fever higher than 102.5 should be cause for concern.dog image by Michal Tudek from Fotolia.com
Not all dogs with pancreatitis spike a fever, but many do. A dog's normal temperature ranges from 100.5 to 102.5 degrees. If your dog has a fever higher than normal and is showing other pancreatitis symptoms, take it to your vet immediately. - A dog with pancreatitis may show signs of depression because of pain.dog image by Oleg Salamaha from Fotolia.com
