How to Stop Dog Eye Drainage

    • 1). Visit a veterinarian. There are many different causes for eye drainage and unless the culprit is diagnosed, the proper treatment cannot be found. Physical problems such as entropion can cause discharge as the eyelids are turned inward, allowing the eyelashes to constantly rub against the eyeball. Eye infections, allergies and blocked tear ducts can all cause the discharge as well.

    • 2). Consent for surgery to be performed if the drainage is caused by a physical condition such as entropion. While ointment can be applied to the eye to protect it from the lash irritation, the only permanent way to resolve the issue is via surgery.

    • 3). Apply ointment to your dog's eyes by holding them open with your less dominant hand and squirting the medication into the eye with your dominant hand. Squeeze a line of ointment across the eyeball, being careful not to let the tip of the applicator touch anything.

    • 4). Squeeze drops into your dog's eyes by holding them open and applying the prescribed amount of drops inside. Do not let the tip of the tube touch anything, as this compromises its sterility.

    • 5). Give your pet antihistamines if allergies are the culprit. Your vet will likely prescribe pills; the easiest method to give them to your pet is by hiding them in a piece of soft cheese, meat, peanut butter or bread. Follow the dosage information prescribed by your veterinarian.
