    How to Become an IT Specialist

    • 1). Complete an undergraudate degree. To become an IT specialist, it's important to have at least a bachelor's degree from a college or university. The degree usually takes four years to complete. Courses like English, statistics, and computer- related classes are included in the degree.

    • 2). Obtain a computer support job. According to the BLS, most IT specialists start out as computer support staff before moving on to perform advanced information technology positions.

    • 3). Have the required skills. Individuals interested in becoming an IT specialist need required skills to make it in the field. Communication skills are essential. An IT specialist has to be able to communicate with staff who are, and are not, familiar with computers.

      The ability to multi-task is also important. An IT specialist should be able to work on more than one computer project at the same time. In addition, some skills require a specialist to work alone or as a part of a team. Thus, people interested in this field should know how to do both. Other skills needed include the ability to pay attention to detail, to concentrate, and to solve problems.
