Obnoxious people can be extremely annoying, especially loud boisterous ones.
You know the ones we're talking about.
They come into a room with flamboyance and a loud voice to signal to all that they have arrived.
It can be hard to know how to deal with obnoxious people because they think that they're better than everyone else and will speak louder than the average person about your faults so other people can hear it.
Or how about the one that makes you a target of their offbeat jokes? As you are quite well aware, obnoxious people can be an embarrassment to be around.
However, an obnoxious person isn't a bad person.
For many, they have been obnoxious for so long they don't even realize that they are being obnoxious.
Fortunately for them there are some things you can do to help.
Here are three pointers on how to deal with obnoxious people.
1) Face to face communication It's important for the obnoxious person, if they are to become aware of their obnoxious behavior, for you to meet with them face to face.
You should also make this meeting only between the obnoxious person and yourself.
It's not helpful if other parties are present because then the obnoxious person may feel like they are being ganged up on.
And this will only put them on the defensive.
When that happens they will not listen and will more than likely become aggressively boisterous and obnoxious.
The result of that will be that you will never be given that opportunity again.
With that in mind, schedule a meeting with the obnoxious person at a location that is comfortable and where there will be no interruptions.
2) Be prepared Prior to the scheduled meeting it would help both the obnoxious person and yourself if you were to make a list of points that you would like to cover when you are talking to each other.
This list should consist of not only the things about the obnoxious person that bother you, but also the reasons and the specific events in which the obnoxious person was obnoxious.
A list of points will help you keep the meeting focused so that these difficult person and you can get the most out of it.
Without a list the meeting has the potential to wonder aimlessly around and not accomplish anything.
3) Explain your position Start the meeting by explaining why you want to talk to the obnoxious person.
As you explain the reasons why to them be sure to maintain eye contact.
Eye contact is especially important whenever explaining how and why the difficult person makes you feel the way you do.
Eye contact sends the message that you are sincere about what you are saying to the other person.
If you don't maintain eye contact the obnoxious person will not take you seriously.
After you explain why you arranged the meeting with the person in question you can begin discussing the points you wrote down on your list.
As you are discussing these points don't talk to the obnoxious person in a condescending manner, but instead speak to them as if you are their equal, of which you are if you think about it.
The obnoxious person is a human being just like you, but just needs a little help to become aware of their behavior.
Also, be prepared and keep yourself open to listen to this person's responses.
Listening makes a discussion a two way street and encourages the other's participation.
You can learn how to deal with obnoxious people in a humanistic way.
Remember, many of these people don't realize they are obnoxious because they are just being themselves, behaving in a way that they have for many years.
If you are sincere and patient you just might win the obnoxious person over to changing their behavior.
