How to Solve Home Heating Problems
- 1). Think about unusual noises you heard before the furnace died or started acting up. Chattering or a grinding noise can indicate electrical problems. Huffing and puffing noises might indicate delayed ignition issues. Bumps and clunks could indicate a cracked pulley belt. Call a professional to fix these.
- 2). Check the burners for rust flakes, ash and dirt. These will cause the flame to burn yellow instead of a clean blue. Grit also can cause a flame to flicker or go out.
- 3). Sweep out and clean the burners.
- 4). Remove the pilot light and gently blow on it to clean. If this doesn't work, replace the pilot light.
- 5). Use a fine-grit sandpaper to clean the thermocouple if the pilot light doesn't work. Replace the thermocouple if this doesn't improve the pilot light's performance.
- 6). Ensure that the blower fan is working properly.
- 1). Install double-paned windows. The air trapped between the two panes serves as an insulator and acts as a barrier against the cold.
- 2). Plug cracks in window frames with putty or another sealing agent.
- 3). Mount clear plastic tarp over your windows with staples or thumb tacks.
- 4). Open the windows and drapes to let in the sunshine. Cut down any large branches blocking the sun and put away any awnings installed during the summer for shade.
