Flower gardens not only provide beauty to your home, but serve as a source of exercise and relaxation and set a mood for spending time in your garden, yard or on a deck or patio. Before you plant, gather gardening basics such as the proper flower garden soil and any soil supplements necessary to support a bright, long-lasting and healthy flower garden for your area of the country. - Design a pink and white path to lead to a storybook playhouse.white and pink flower image by saied shahinkiya from Fotolia.com
Create areas in your yard using flower beds to set the stage for vignettes. Design each bed by color and set a mood and purpose for the area. Blend blue and purple flowers for a reading niche, bright yellow, reds and oranges for an area to enjoy morning coffee or an evening cocktail, or design paths of white and pink flowers to lead to a storybook playhouse for a child. - Anything can be an inspiration for your choice of flower colors.colorful flowers design image by Cristina Cazan from Fotolia.com
Design flower beds in such a way that the flowers provide bands of color. Curve the beds to promote an interesting appeal. Mix different flowers in each band keeping the color scheme somewhat monochromatic for each band. For a smaller garden, design the same effect using blocks of color. Simply use colors that you like or design the bands and blocks with a theme in mind. Choose colors associated with family birthstones, a swatch of pattern fabric, your favorite pro or college team or colors that remind you of a favorite destination. Use bold-colored flowers for a punch of color or soften the look with flowers in pastel. - Create warmth and drama in any space with potted flowers.flower pots image by photobar from Fotolia.com
Select a variety of clay or ornamental pots in different shapes and sizes. Plant two to four different colors of flowers in each pot. Combine flowers that grow upright with those than tend to hang or trail. Use contrasting or complimentary colors in each pot. Place the pots in any areas that need to be dressed with color. This flower growing option works well in small spaces as well as larger spaces, where growing flowers in the ground may not be an option. Blend herbs into your pots for fragrance, cooking and craft use.
