How to Boost Cable Reception

    • 1). Locate your cable's main line. This will be a wire coming in from the street or out of the ground near the power, water or gas meter outside your home. It will be a black cable with a round metal end. Trace this wire to the first place it splits.

    • 2). Add a coaxial cable to your main line at the splitter. Disconnect the input wire from the splitter; it will be the wire that goes into the side with the single port, and is likely labeled "input." Reconnect it to the input side of the amplifier. Insert the metal pin from one of the wires into the pin-sized hole in the splitter. Twist the end to secure it in place. Then connect an RG-6 cable to the output of the amplifier.

    • 3). Replace your splitter. Disconnect all wires running from the outputs of your splitter, then reconnect them to the outputs of your new splitter. Connect the wire coming from your amplifier to the input port of your splitter.

    • 4). Trace your wires from your splitter to all attached televisions. If there are any additional splitters, replace them as well.

    • 5). Replace any damaged wire with RG-6 coaxial cable. RG-6 grade coaxial cable is the standard for high-definition cable installations and will be sufficient for any system. Damaged wire could have cuts in the exterior tubing or rusty ends.
