The city of San Diego operates a variety of public transport such as San Diego Trolleys, San Diego Northern Railway, San Diego Transit and North San Diego County transit. Transit enforcement officers in San Diego operate on a system loosely based on the military and have the authority to arrest citizens who commit a crime near the officer. - Transit enforcement officers provide a daily service to San Diego by patrolling the transit system both in cars at the stations and on foot. Officers may ride trains, trolleys and buses either in uniform or undercover to make sure operations are running smoothly. This includes checking tickets and making sure all riders follow the rules set forth by the system of transit. The officers may arrest those they catch breaking laws and turn them over to local law enforcement.
- In addition to day-to-day duties, the transit officers collaborate with San Diego law enforcement. Transit enforcement officers regularly meet with the police force to discuss ongoing issues within the community, set up plans for resolving problems and plan what to do in the event of an emergency. If a natural disaster, such as a fire or earthquake, occurs, it is part of the job of the patrolling transit enforcement officers to keep the peace and ensure riders are safe.
- Transit enforcement officers are allowed to arrest felons under the California Penal Code Section 837, even if the particular felony was not committed in front of the transit enforcement officer. Transit enforcement officers are also allowed to apprehend criminals who have committed a felony or misdemeanor in their presence, even if it does not pertain to the transit system. Typically, those arrested are immediately turned over to San Diego law enforcement.
- The city of San Diego works closely with transit enforcement officers during special events such as festivals or sports games which may cause a higher volume of transit riders than usual. Transit enforcement officers are responsible for coming up with a plan to maintain order on transit during these peak times.
