    Lowering Hereditary Cholesterol

    • 1). Limit consumption of foods that are high in saturated fats, trans fats and cholesterol. The American Heart Association suggests incorporating a variety of fruits, vegetables, high-fiber foods, whole grains, lean meat cuts, fish and fat-free dairy products into a daily diet to help improve cholesterol levels.

    • 2). Get physically active. The American Heart Association states that incorporating regular exercises such as walking, cycling, aerobics, dancing, jogging or swimming for about 30 minutes and at least three days per week, will improve cholesterol levels as well as overall health.

    • 3). Talk to a doctor about cholesterol-lowering prescription drugs that will best work in the event that diet and exercise alone does not lower cholesterol. The American Heart Association suggests taking prescription drug therapy in conjunction with a diet-and-exercise program.

    • 4). Take LDL cholesterol therapy to lower hereditary high cholesterol. According to University of Michigan Health Systems, a procedure known as LDL apheresis that chemically cleanses the blood of LDL cholesterol has been known to reduce LDL cholesterol by up to 80 percent. It is recommended for those who have undergone the maximum drug therapy and diets that have been ineffective and those who have coronary heart disease and cholesterol levels above 200mg.
