How to Set up a Story Book in InDesign
- 1). Open Adobe InDesign. Press “Ctrl-N” on the keyboard. The New Document window opens.
- 2). Select “Print” from the “Intent” menu if you are printing the book. The Facing Pages box is automatically checked, which allows you to set inside and outside margins for a bound book. For all electronic formats, including e-books and PDF books, select “Web.”
- 3). Select the page size from the “Page Size” menu, or type the dimensions of a single page in the Height and Width text fields.
- 4). Click the “Landscape” icon if you want the pages to be wider than they are tall. By default, “Portrait” orientation is selected.
- 5). Type the margin sizes in the Margins section, or use the arrows to increase or decrease the default values. These will serve as a guide when placing text and images in the story book. You can still place text and images outside of the margins if needed.
- 6). Click “OK” to create the new document. Save the document as you are working on the book by clicking "Save" from the File menu.
- 1). Click “New Master” in the Pages panel menu to create a master layout for your pages if you want to include the same information on multiple pages, such as page numbers. Note that two pages are added if your book has facing pages.
- 2). Click the new master page in the Pages panel. It appears in the main window.
- 3). Select the “Type Tool” from the Toolbox, then drag it on the bottom corner of the master page to create a text box. Select “Insert Special Character” from the Type menu and click “Auto Page Number.” Repeat this for the second master page if you are using facing pages in your book layout.
- 4). Click the “New Page” icon in the Pages panel to add new pages to your story book. New pages will automatically be formatted with the last master page setup used. To create a page with no master layout, drag the blank (“None”) layout onto the new page in the Pages panel.
- 1). Click a page in the Pages panel. Click the “Type Tool” in the Toolbox and drag it across the page to create a text box. Type or paste text into the text box.
- 2). Press “Ctrl-A” to highlight all of the text in the box. Adjust the formatting as desired using the Options bar, including the font, font size, spacing, color.
- 3). Add an image to the page by selecting “Place” from the File menu. Navigate to the picture and click “Open.” Click the “Selection Tool” in the Toolbox and click the spot on the page where you want the image to appear.
- 4). Move and resize images and text boxes as needed by clicking them with the Selection Tool. Click and drag the corners to resize objects on the page.
