How to Cover a Chain Link Fence

    • 1). Pick one or several types of vining coverage that you will use for your fence. You can choose annual flowers, perennials, green plants or a mixture. Plants that would work to cover your chain link fence include morning glory, nasturtium, honeysuckle, passionflower vine, cardinal climber, hops, clematis or vining roses.

    • 2). Measure the width of your chain link fence, using the measuring tape. Dave's Garden suggests planting a new vine every 8 to 12 inches to ensure full coverage when the plants mature. Divide your total number of inches by the spacing you intend to do to arrive at the number of vines you need to plant.

    • 3). Purchase vine starters or seeds at a local garden center. You may wish to get one or two extra plants.

    • 4). Loosen the soil near the chain link fence with a shovel. If you're planting seeds, create a furrow and sow seeds at the depth directed on the package. Plant more seeds than you want mature vines since some seeds may fail to germinate. If planting starts, dig a hole for the starter that is twice the size of the root ball. Place starters in the soil and cover over. Water the area when you're finished planting.

    • 5). Watch the vines grow. Water as needed.

    • 6). Train vines to climb the fence by winding new tendrils up the fence. You may need to position plants on the fence several times for them to take hold.
