Naturally Cleaning Your Home Humidifier

• When cleaning your humidifier, always unplug the unit first and follow the manufacturer recommendations and precautions for cleaning. Mix 3 oz. of hydrogen peroxide with 7 oz. of distilled water in a spray bottle. Remove the water tank and empty it. Spray the solution around the tank, inside and outside the unit to remove as much film buildup as possible. Mix even parts of white vinegar and distilled water in another spray bottle. Use this solution to wipe inside the unit, around the areas that come in contact with water and the water tank. Thoroughly clean the wiped areas with water and paper towels. Sanitizing Your Humidifier

• Portable humidifiers require special attention for proper cleaning. Fill the tank with new water and add 1 tsp. of bleach for every gallon of water. Let the water stand inside the humidifier for about 20 minutes, stirring the solution every few minutes. Follow with a thorough cleaning of the unit as described above. Sanitize the unit every seven days if your humidifier has a capacity of 5 gallons or less. If your humidifier has a capacity of 5 gallons or more, sanitize the unit every two weeks.

• Clean your portable humidifier daily. Empty the tank, dry it and refill it with distilled water to minimize the chance of microorganism growth and reduce indoor air exposure to minerals.
