How to Design a Rustic Fenced Garden
- 1). Measure your garden space or the space within the yard where you want to create the rustic area.
- 2). Choose and install your fencing. Rustic fencing usually means wooden fencing with a more natural element than traditional fence panels. Examples of rustic fencing include wattle fences, split rail fencing and picket fences. Fancy wrought iron fencing can also look rustic when it has scrolls and bends.
- 3). Decide on a garden layout. Choose areas for flowering plants, trees, vegetable patches, seating and walkways. Base decisions for plants on how much sun and drainage the land has and the space you have available. Draw a scale plan on paper, using your area measurements as a guide for where to place garden elements.
- 4). Make lists of plants that will grow in the conditions you have and decide whether or not you want a tree. Trees offer shade and structure to a garden and add to the rustic appeal if you build a seat around a mature tree. An alternative is to add a table and chairs beneath the boughs of a large tree.
- 5). Place willow trellises against walls for climbing plants, and give climbing vegetables willow poles or tripods for support. Keep the rustic theme by using only natural materials in the garden rather than plastic or man-made materials.
- 6). Give paths a rustic look by using crazy paving, homemade mosaics or tiles in pathways and patios, or use natural sandstone. Make stepping stones from log slices and lay mulched bark around flowerbeds to suppress weeds and help retain moisture.
