How to Get Rid of a Smoke Smell in a House After a Fire
- 1). Ventilate the house by opening doors and windows. Use fans to assist in circulating the fresh air.
- 2). Wash any items such as clothing, draperies, furniture covers and blankets. If you have an outdoor wash line, hang these items up outside to air dry.
- 3). Use a carpet cleaner to deep clean your carpets. Carpet cleaners, such as a wet/dry vacuum, extract odor from deep within the carpet fibers.
- 4). Clean the area where the fire began. If the fire was small, you can do this yourself. If the area is too big for you to handle, the fire department can recommend a company to assist in clean up.
- 5). Place charcoal sticks or bowls of vinegar in inconspicuous places throughout your house. Both charcoal and vinegar absorb odor. This will neutralize the smell rather than cover it up.
