    The Benefits of Breathalyzer Testing

    • Breathalyzer alcohol testing is fast and non-invasive. Unlike blood and urine alcohol testing, breath testing can be conducted almost anywhere and does not require subsequent laboratory analysis. Immediate test results allow for an immediate response in safety sensitive or critical medical situations.

    Breathalyzers are Widely Used

    • Breathalyzers are used by law enforcement to deter intoxicated driving and enforce road safety. Probation and parole officers test offenders to monitor and enforce the conditions of probation. Workplace BAC testing is administered by employers to detect alcohol intoxication in safety sensitive jobs. Healthcare practitioners use breathalyzers to identify alcohol abuse that may underlie medical or social behavior problems.

    Professional Breathalyzers

    • The Department of Transportation (DOT) tests and approves breathalyzers for professional use. As a public service, the DOT publishes a "conforming products list" of breathalyzers that have met their standards for accuracy and precision.

    Personal Breathalyzers

    • All personal breathalyzers must be tested and cleared by the Food and Drug Administration. The FDA tests breathalyzers for consumer safety and for their ability to screen for the presence of breath alcohol. Unlike the DOT, the FDA does not test for BAC measurement accuracy.

    Breathalyzer Technology

    • Ttwo popular technologies are used in portable breathalyzers. Semiconductor technology, often found in consumer testers, is inexpensive but suffers from wide variation in accuracy and reliability. Fuel cell technology is used in professional breathalyzers and in better quality personal testers. Fuel cell technology is more expensive but less prone to inaccurate and inconsistent readings.

    Buying a Breathalyzer

    • With breathalyzers, you get what you pay for. If BAC accuracy is important, look for a fuel cell tester. If you are only concerned about detecting breath alcohol, a semiconductor breathalyzer will suffice.
