Mobility scooters provide a very safe and reliable method for individuals who have trouble walking.
Often times individuals who are able to walk, but do so with difficulty opt to use a mobility scooter in place of a wheelchair.
There are mobility scooters of many different shapes and sizes available.
Mobility scooters are devices that are intended to improve a person's mobility and range of motion.
They feature a seat, which can typically be adjusted for comfort and functionality, and can carry a single individual.
The weight that a unit can support depends on the model and it is a good idea to always get a unit that can support an extra 20% of weight than you anticipate requiring.
One very popular type of mobility scooter is the travel scooter.
A travel scooter is made with limited features and usually only has the basics required for safety and usability.
This is because a travel scooter is designed to be taken apart and stored in small areas, which means that it is imperative that the device be as light as possible.
These scooters are great for taking on vacation and do not require any sort of special scooter lift or carrier for your vehicle.
Another popular type of adult scooter is the heavy duty scooter.
A heavy duty scooter can support a good deal of weight and is designed for outdoor use.
They have a greater ground clearance, better suspension, and larger tires, which makes it ideal for travel over terrain that might otherwise be impassable.
These units also tend to have a much larger range and a higher top speed, but are not as maneuverable in tight corners.
For this reason if you intend to frequently use your mobility scooter indoors, you might find that a heavy duty mobility scooter can not handle the tight turns required.
For instance most heavy duty scooters have a turning radius of between 50 - 75 inches, while some non-heavy duty scooters have turning radiuses that are as low as 22 inches.
One of the major factors that contributes to a mobility scooters turning radius is its wheelbase.
A mobility scooter that has 4 wheels will tend to have a larger turning radius than scooters with only 3 wheels.
Since they are lighter and more maneuverable, many travel scooters utilize a 3 wheel platform.
The maneuverability of a 3 wheeled mobility scooter is at the loss of the extra stability and balance provided by 4 wheels.
If you need a mobility scooter that can support extra weight or intended to use it over rough terrain, you will be better served by a scooter that utilizes a 4 wheel platform.
Most heavy duty scooters use the 4 wheel platform, but there are a few that use a 3 wheeled design.
Mobility scooters are a great way to ensure that you are able to safely and reliable maintain your mobility.
Since there are so many types available, it can be a good idea to determine first when you intend to use your device and then begin looking at the ones available.
