Temperament in the Elderly
Is your elderly loved one changing? Have you recently moved your family member and they don't seem to be adjusting? Does it seem like the "joy" is gone out of their lives? Perhaps their attitude is negative? Many things can be going on and your patience is really needed to either get them diagnosed, or learn to accept their new place in life.
It's never easy watching people get older.
Many baby boomers are taking care of their parents in the twenty-first century.
For some it is the first time they have ever had to take care of any elderly family, but it is now time.
This isn't something that we think about until we are in the position where we need to make decisions for them.
Understanding what is going on will help you stay patient through the process.
Elderly people are often times on medications that can be changing their mood.
Medicines can interfere with each other and be causing them to not get the results that are expected.
When your elderly loved one is not reaping benefits from their new medications it may be time to call the pharmacy or doctor.
An alternate drug can often be prescribed.
Depression can set in during times of change.
It's not easy to move, no matter how old you are.
People often times believe that moving means their friends won't visit them, in reality no one may be coming to see them now.
It really doesn't matter, it can create sadness.
If after a short time, maybe two weeks, the depression isn't lifting, it may be necessary to address the doctor about the situation.
Many things can cause people to stop eating.
Medications, or a stroke can change taste buds.
If their favorite foods are no longer appealing, bring them something they haven't tried before.
Maybe a topping on their ice cream or an apple sauce that is more tart.
Club soda instead of plain water may taste good and help to give them some extra hydration.
The onset of alzheimer's can be confusing to older people.
They may suspect that things are changing and realize that they cannot make decisions for themselves.
It's good to have a geriatric doctor to discuss your elderly family's problems with.
Hopefully some of their problems can be lessened.
As difficult as this process is for you, keep in mind that some people never regain their happiness in later years, but hopefully they can enjoy a certain amount of contentment.
