Titanic Facts - Things You May Not Have Known

103 3
You probably know, from movies or books, that the Titanic is one of the largest ships in history to sink after hitting an iceberg and as a result causing the loss of many lives.
But there are many Titanic facts that you may not know by now.
The exact time that the Titanic hit the iceberg was 11:40 pm on April 14, 1912.
It sunk 2 hours later after hitting the iceberg.
There was also a change of plans before the Titanic took off which, if not done, could have saved a lot of lives.
The original plan was to take a lifeboat drill on board the Titanic on the same date that it sunk.
But due to unreason reasons, Captain Smith cancelled the drill.
Most of the lifeboats that were used for saving the people on board before the ship sunk launched off when not in full capacity.
For instance, the first lifeboat to launch had a capacity of 65 but it only carried 24 people.
So more lives could have been saved if the lifeboats were packed to full capacity despite the fact that they were few.
The closest ship that could have rescued the Titanic, the Californian, did not respond to the distress signals it began sending until it was much too late to help.
On April 15, 1912 at 12:45 am the crew members on the Californian saw the distress flares that were sent up from the Titanic in the sky and alerted their captain, but the captain did not issue any orders.
The wireless operator of the Californian had also gone to bed that time, and as a result the ship was not aware of any distress signals from the Titanic until the morning.
The ship that helped in rescuing the survivors was the Carpathia.
It was quite far from the Titanic compared to the Californian.
If the Californian had responded to the Titanic's distress signals, more lives could have probably been saved.
Two dogs were also rescued.
It is a bit surprising that the two dogs made it into the lifeboats despite the fact that women and children were the ones being allowed in the lifeboats first, and there were also no enough lifeboats for everyone on board the ship to be saved.
The total number of dogs on board was nine.
The Titanic's fourth funnel was just for show.
The side view of the ship had four cream and black funnels.
It is only three of these funnels that released steam from the boilers.
The fourth one was included because the designers thought the ship will look more impressive if it had four funnels rather than three.
Even though the third class of the titanic had over 700 passengers, there were only two bathtubs for all of them.
They had it rough when it came to sharing those bathrooms.
Another of the Titanic facts that you might have not known is that the Titanic also had just about everything on board, including its own newspaper.
It had the Atlantic Daily Bulletin that was printed every day and it included news, stock prices, advertisements, society gossip, horse-racing results and the day's menu.
