Homemade Air Diffuser
- 1). Mix three parts of the essential oil with seven parts of the dipropylene glycol. If you plan on only making one diffuser, you can measure each part as an ounce, giving you 10 ounces of fluid to use as your diffuser oil. If you are going to make a batch of oil for several diffusers, you may want to measure each part as a cup. The dipropylene glycol is an additive used to reduce the viscosity of the oil, making it easier for the reeds to soak up the scented oil and diffuse it into the room. Stir the mixture well to blend the oil and dipropylene glycol together.
- 2). Make sure the glass container is clean and free of any dirt or dust, then pour the mixture into the glass container. The more mixture you have in the container, the longer the air diffuser will last before you need to add more liquid. You may need to use a funnel to pour the mixture into the bottle to avoid spills.
- 3). Insert the reeds into the bottle. They should easily reach the bottom of the container and stick out the top. The reeds should be double the height of the container, so the same amount is sticking out the top as is in the bottle. You may cut the reeds to make them all the same length if you wish. Depending on the size of the neck of the bottle, eight to twelve reeds should be sufficient to diffuse the scent into the air.
- 4). Set the container in a location where it will have air circulating around the reeds and where the container will not be easily knocked over. Allow the container to sit for several days with the reeds in the liquid to soak up the liquid and diffuse the scent. If you do not smell the diffused scent in several days, check the reeds and make sure they are soaking up the liquid. If they are not, try using a different type of reed or mix the solution again, adding more dipropylene glycol to thin the liquid.
