The herb garden requires some of the least amount of care and attention of any other type of plant. Its a great introduction to gardening. Those who are able to master growing herbs can move on to more difficult projects. Many prefer to simply stay with herbs.

Can herbs be grown indoors? : Yes. Many herbs actually benefit from being grown inside. It is very easy to plant herbs in pots. This allows you to grow the herbs in just about any windowsill. The important part is giving your plant the amount of light it needs in order to survive. Since many herbs are sensitive to frost, the ability to maintain a temperature helps the herbs to grow.

How often should herbs be watered? : Most herbs do best when watered once a day. If the herbs are outside, the weather conditions will determine how often to water. A good way to determine if you need to water your plant is to first check the soil. If it feels moist to the touch, it does not need to be watered. Make sure the soil does not feel wet, as this is a sign there is too much water in the soil.

Why are the leaves withered if the soil is moist? : The problem you are having with your herb garden is your leaves are not getting enough moisture. Remember, plants like to get water from the roots and the leaves. A quick fix here would be to mist the leaves with a spray bottle. They will be able to absorb the water and be a more vibrant green.

Which type of soil should I plant in? : The best kind of soil to plant in will be weak in nutrients. If planting in a pot you want to mix potting soil with sand. Not only is potting soil too nutrient rich, it has trouble retaining moisture for long periods of time. The sand will help in both problems. You will also want to mix in about a tablespoon of lime per five-inch pot. This will give the herb the sweet soil it craves.

What kind of pot is best for planting? : The best pots for an herb garden are clay pots. The reason for this is the soil is able to breathe. When the soil gets more oxygen, it translates into a more healthy plant. This helps the plant to grow better and the leaves to be more vibrant. If using the herbs in cooking, you will notice a difference in flavor.
