Ear Popping Symptoms

104 14

    Identification

    • An enormous amount of pressure is felt in the ear. A temporary reduction in hearing is also common. Dizziness can also occur.

    Causes

    • Ear popping is caused by pressure on the outside of the ear and pressure on the inside of the ear being different. Ear popping happens frequently on airplanes.

    Prevention/Solution

    • The eustachian tube can be opened by chewing gum, yawning and exhaling while holding the nose. This might release the pressure. Sufferers should also avoid sleeping while the plane is landing as this can aggravate the ear popping.

    Treatments

    • Antihistamines, steroids and decongestants can help reduce ear-popping symptoms. These are best taken before a flight.

    Complications

    • Ear popping shouldn't last more than a few hours after a flight. Chronic ear popping, severe pain, fever and leaking can be signs of a more serious condition.
