What Are Hair Plugs?

Hair plugs are a great way to keep a full, healthy head of hair even if you have problems with hair loss.
Hair plug surgery entails moving small areas of your scalp that are full of healthy hair follicles, into areas where the hair has stopped growing.
This is usually the hair around the side and back of the head that is moved onto the top of the cranium.
Hair plugs are usually successful as the parts of the head that are moved contain hair follicles that are programmed to continue growing for most of the person's life.
That is why the sides and back of the head are perfect donor sites for the hair plugs that are needed during the transplant.
A hair plug is the size and profile of the area of the scalp that has been removed or cut away during a transplant.
The way that this procedure is usually performed is with a cutting tool or punch called a trephine.
The trephine is used to remove round areas of the scalp that contain the healthy hair follicles.
This little piece of scalp is called a hair plug.
In reality though what is actually taking place is a scalp graft.
The diameter of these little skin grafts is normally around 2 - 5 millimetres.
Over a few years, up to 500 or 600 of these little grafts can be moved from healthy patches of the scalp to thinning areas.
Although during a normal treatment session only about 50 to 100 grafts are removed from the donor site to allow for proper healing.
After the graft has been removed from the donor site, a smaller trephine punch is used to create another small opening in the scalp at the area of the head that is receiving the hair plug.
What this does is help to ensure that the hair plug and the receiving areas of the scalp fuse together and heal quickly with as little scarring as possible.
It has been found over time that hair plugs do not work very well around the hair line and give the hair plug patient a very unnatural look.
This mishap has been aptly named doll hair because it looks very similar to the way that doll hair actually looks.
Hair plugs have been found to work exceptionally well around the crown of the skull.
Their main purpose is to thicken out the existing hair.
The hair line is subject to other procedures that help make the transplant look a lot more natural.
Over the years hair plug surgery has become a very effective way of reducing the affects of hair loss.
The techniques have improved greatly since they first were performed and now the procedure is known as hair micro-transplantation.
A skilled surgeon can place the hair plugs in the right place making the new hair look completely normal and natural even upon fairly close inspection of the skull.
