For true nature lovers there is nothing better than being able to view wildlife from their kitchen window or that bench in the garden.
Bird watching allows most home owners to enjoy a bit of nature right in their own yard.
However, in order to watch the birds you have to first attract them.
Here are some tips on how you can use decorative birdhouses and other items to attract birds to make their home in your yard.
Not all birds will use birdhouses.
Some prefer to make their homes in trees, fields and even in the open.
However, there are several types of birds that will and even prefer to make their homes in man made birdhouses.
However, in order to get the birds to consider a decorative birdhouse for a home you must first attract the birds to your yard.
You can do this in a variety of ways.
Bird Feeders By placing bird feeders in your yard near where you have put up your bird houses you are encouraging a variety of birds to visit your home for a snack or a meal.
Many birds will be more than eager to make their homes near a readily available food source.
This means if you supply the food and a birdhouse near one another those birds who prefer to make them homes in a closed in space will be likely to use the home you provide for them since they will be close to a food source.
Bird Baths Bird baths are also an excellent way to attract birds to your yard and to the areas where you have placed birdhouses.
Birds love to bath and play in water and they also appreciate a ready supply of drinking water that is always available.
Having both a ready supply of food and water in your yard for these winged creatures will certainly make your yard an appealing place for them to make their home.
Provide Them With Nesting Materials Having a three sided wire cage filled with nesting materials in the spring will certainly provide a lot of incentive for your feathered friends to make their home close by.
This cage should be filled with twigs, feathers, wools, fiber scraps and anything else that the birds in your area like to use to build a nest.
This self serve bedding material will encourage those birds to use the homes you have provided for them.
Not Every Birdhouse Is Suitable For Every Bird Keep in mind that not every birdhouse is suitable for every kind of bird.
Know what birds are in your area and buy a decorative birdhouse that is suitable for the needs of those particular birds.
While there are several different birds who will make their homes in decorative birdhouses, chickadees, gold finches and sparrows are easy to attract and a joy to watch.
While decorative bird houses can add charm to your garden or yard decor by themselves, having them occupied by those wonderful winged friends can make your yard come alive with song, an activity that will bring you closer to nature and give you hours of enjoyment.
