Copywriting Tips - Your Sales Letter Is Garbage

103 4
Well, that's a rude awakening wouldn't you say? But it's true.
If you're like most copywriters just starting out, your sales letter is garbage.
Hey, don't feel bad...
so was mine.
I remember my first attempt at salescopy.
It was pretty pitiful.
What I didn't understand was why.
See, it's not just about knowledge.
Sure, you have to know the basics.
But it goes way beyond that.
In this article, I'm going to explain to you why your sales letter is garbage beyond the obvious reasons.
Okay, forgetting about the fact that you don't know the basics, the biggest reason that your sales letter is garbage is that you don't know your target market.
You have no idea what pushes the buttons of these buyers.
Everybody is motivated by something different.
The kid who is looking for a cure for his acne is not doing it because he really cares that he has acne.
He's doing it because he wants a date with that cute girl who's sitting across from him in English class.
That is HIS motivation.
And THAT is what you have to tap into when you write your sales letter.
Otherwise, all the fancy basics in the world don't mean a hill of beans.
Another reason your sales letter is garbage is because you haven't taken the time to study what makes a great sales letter.
You don't get this out of a book, no matter how great the book is.
You get this from actually studying salescopy that has been written by the greats such as Gary Halbert, Clayton Makepeace, Michel Fortin and so on.
You can't even begin to imagine how much of an education you'll get just from reading these masterful writers.
Don't think for a minute that other writers aren't creating swipe files from some of these great masters.
They are and they use them...
constantly.
That's why so many great sales letters all read the same.
Finally, and this is another big reason, you don't write enough.
You can't become a great copywriter without writing a lot of copy.
Do you think Derek Jeter is a great ballplayer without practicing a lot? As good as he is, he is constantly out there working on his game.
No great person, no matter what they do, gets to be great without a lot of practice.
That goes for copywriting as well.
So if you didn't understand why your sales letter was garbage, you do now.
Now do something about it.
