    Fruits and Vegetables

    • Besides being the key to a balanced diet, fruits and vegetables contain fiber, a dietary must for those seeking to avoid too much cholesterol. Try to incorporate new vegetables and new fruits into your diet. After all, variety leads to balance. When's the last time you tried kale, amaranth, celtuce, radicchio, shallots, rutabaga, turnips, a mango, cherimoya, breadfruit or some spaghetti squash?

    Whole Grains

    • Try eating whole grains on a regular basis. Foods that contain dietary fiber from whole grains include whole grain breads, whole grain cereals, quinoa, whole wheat pastas and oatmeal.

    Refined Grains

    • Avoid eating refined grains. Foods that contain refined grains include white breads, white flour tortillas and many breakfast cereals.

    Sugary Foods

    • Also avoid sugary foods and desserts, like cookies, cakes, candy and junk food. These foods generally contribute to poor health anyway, but are especially high in cholesterol.

    Red Meat and Eggs

    • Avoid eating red meat, including hamburgers and steaks. Red meat is generally high in cholesterol. In fact, beef, veal, pork and lamb have the highest cholesterol content ratio of any food. Egg yolks, too, are especially high in cholesterol. If you do want to include red meat in your diet, eat only lean cuts, and select choice cuts rather than prime cuts. Trim all fat before cooking.

    Fatty Foods

    • Additionally, avoid high-fat foods. High-fat foods include butter, sodas, ice cream, some margarines, cookies, cake, snack foods, fried foods, and of course, all junk food.
