Pregnancy Care Options
- An obstetrician gynecologist is a doctor who specializes in everything having to do with the female reproductive system. She takes care of women before, during and after pregnancy. Ob-gyns who work alone are solo obstetricians.
- Group obstetricians work as a team, with two or more ob-gyns on board. A woman who goes to a group practice will often see two or three doctors throughout her pregnancy.
- A family practitioner is a doctor who practices generalized medicine. They are trained in many areas, often including obstetrics, pediatrics and primary care.
- A certified nurse-midwife is a nurse who has received extensive training in midwifery. They are capable of giving the same care as an obstetrician in cases where the pregnancy is low risk. They operate out of hospitals, birth centers and sometimes private practices.
- Direct-entry midwives are like certified nurse-midwives except they do not always have a nursing degree. They might have been trained through an apprenticeship or some other area of health care. These midwives often attend home births or work at birth centers.
