Catholic All Saints Party Ideas
- Catholic Homeschooling Resources has several ideas on how to celebrate All Saints Day. The highlight of the party is the costumes. Children can dress up as their favorite saint and have a parade. The kids can even sing or march to the tune, "When the Saints Go Marching In." The Catholic Parenting website offers a few dress-up ideas; a shield and some wings can be used to depict St. Michael the Archangel or a beard and tools can be part of a costume for St. Joseph, who was a carpenter.
- A popular tradition in Europe prior to the Reformation, "souling" is the act of praying for those who have died. As part of an All Saints Party, attendees would have a bag to collect candy and slips of paper with the names of deceased members of their families. To enjoy the goodies, they must first pray for the people whose names they received in their bags.
- There are two easy-to-play games that help partygoers learn more about the saints. "Name the Saint" offers clues about the various saints, and attendees must guess which saint is being described. A similar game is "Guess the Saint" where pictures are posted of the saints and partygoers must guess which saint each picture depicts. Catholic Parenting describes another activity that helps generate interaction and engagement among partygoers. A sheet of paper is handed to everyone that includes questions that ask whether people are named for a saint and who their favorite saints are. There is also a question that asks participants to discuss whether they know anyone they believe to be a "living saint" and why.
- There are many ways to decorate for an All Saints Party from hanging or displaying pictures of saints to establishing a heaven-like atmosphere, complete with cotton to make clouds and pretend gates made to illustrate the pearly gates of heaven, as suggested by Catholic Parenting. Everything in the room could be white to coincide with the heavenly theme.
