The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) represents more than 2,700 plastic and reconstructive surgeons worldwide.
It is the world's largest specialty association and part of the American Medical Association (AMA).
All members are board certified surgeons who perform surgery on the head, face, and neck.
The members abide to a specific code of ethics.
The medical industry has advanced greatly in recent years due to specialization.
Because of specialization, AAFPRS members have had more training in facial surgery than any other specialty.
Members of AAFPRS are board certified by a specialty board recognized with the American Board of Medical Specialties.
Many are also certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology.
Some are certified in dermatology, plastic surgery, and ophthalmology.
To address the medical and scientific concerns of facial plastic surgeons, the Educational and Research Foundations for the AAFPRS (AAFPRS Foundation) was established in 1972.
The Foundation created a research program and provides educational resources for the industry professionals.
Facial plastic surgeons have undergone extensive training including college and medical school.
Following 20 years of education, the physician applies for residency in a specific subject.
As a resident the licensed physician pursues post-graduate training after receiving a doctor's degree from medical school.
Facial plastic surgeons typically complete residency training in Otolaryngology-Head-and-Neck Surgery.
Most residents have come from the top quarter of their medical school class.
The first two years of training are dedicated to surgery followed with 4 to 6 years of specialty training in Otolaryngology-Head-and-Neck Surgery.
Studies include anatomy, physiology, illness, and surgical treatment.
Education of function as well as appearance is emphasized.
It is important that a nose not only looks good but works well for respiration as well.
The examination lasts 2 days for board certification.
Some surgeons will sit for a second board examination where peers review surgeries performed by the applicant.
Plastic surgeons are highly trained professionals.
They have undergone many years of training and have the necessary knowledge and skills to perform surgery.
In the case of trauma, surgeons are able to reconstruct the face so that it is functional and aesthetically pleasing.
If you are considering plastic surgery in the Austin area, be sure to thoroughly research your doctor's credentials.
The doctor should have extensive experience in the specialty.
