How to Make a Proper Resume
- 1). Develop a template. The first step in writing a good resume is to compile a template that lists everything of note you have done. This will be your master resume from which you will build individual resumes to go with specific job applications.
- 2). Tailor the resume to the job. Focus on the specific requirements of each job and customize a resume that shows how you meet those requirements. This might seem like a lot of work when you are applying for many jobs, but it can pay off with more interviews. With a customized approach, you also are preparing for the interview should you get called.
- 3). Focus on your accomplishments, not just job history. This applies to both seasoned professionals and entry-level employees. For example, you may have been the head of a student group you started in college. You can include this to highlight your leadership skills. If you're a seasoned professional, focus on areas where you left the most significant imprint. Highlight what you did and how that brought value to the organization for which you worked.
- 4). Highlight your strengths. Have a section at the top of your resume where you focus on what you do best. This draws a future employer's attention to what you bring to the table. A good way to figure out what to put in this section will be to look at the job announcement and tailor your strengths to exactly what the employer needs.
- 5). Be brief. Your resume should be no more than two pages. Not many employers will want to read more than that. There are exceptions to this rule, such as in academia, where a detailed CV is often required. Pick the format that works best for you. If your experience is more important, start with that. If your education is more valued, start with your list of degrees.
