How Do I Extend a Curtain Rod?

    Determine Rod Measurements

    • Measure the horizontal length above the window you are placing the curtain rod with a measuring tape. If you would like the curtain rod to extend beyond the window then account for this in the measurements. Make sure there is space in the room to accommodate for the length of the rod that you desire.

    Choose Curtains

    • Pick out the curtains for the space before you purchase a curtain rod. The heaviness, color or length could determine what kind of rod you select. You may need a stronger rod for heavier curtains. Make sure to choose the right rod for your space and one that coordinates with your room decor.

    Extending Rods

    • Purchase several rods to extend rod length beyond those of basic curtain rods. Cut off the return end of the extra rod with a hacksaw. You may have to sand down the rough edges so it does not catch on the curtain. Use pliers to make the end larger or smaller, depending on the size of the adjoining rod, so it can fit inside the hole. Place the cut piece inside the main rod. Make sure the rod is at the exact length needed for the curtains and duct tape together the places where the rods meet. This added support will keep the rod from slipping. Another option is to use short metal screws to keep the rods together.

    Considerations

    • Always use support brackets for the center of the rod to prevent it from sagging. A second person should hold the center of the rod so it does not bend when installing.
Duct tape could possibly get in the way when sliding the curtains onto the rod, so make sure it can fit.
