Lutein is one of the most critical natural nutrients available to treat macular degeneration.
This nutrient is found in high levels of concentration in the macula, which is a section of the eye, which is responsible for central vision.
Lutein becomes critical when discussing macular degeneration treatment because of the importance of preserving as much of the macula as possible.
The macula is known to have high concentration of lutein and studies have suggested that patients supplementing with high does benefit.
The very name of the macula, Macula lutea in Latin, means yellow spot.
The yellow comes from lutein.
The source of this nutrient is green leafy vegetables.
It is not found in high amounts animal products.
Some amounts may be found in eggs, but the best source is plant based products.
While vegetables such as carrots are known to be beneficial to the eye, it is the green vegetables such as kale and spinach most potent and should be used.
Many studies have found lutein to be effective in preventing the progression of macular degeneration and also as a very important nutrient to take in prevention.
It is also known to be helpful in aiding other forms of eye disorders such as cataracts.
One of the reasons this nutrient is of such great importance aside from its established relation to the retina is that is a very powerful antioxidant.
This is an important point as much of the damage to the eye is due to oxidative damage.
Oxidative damage occurs due to free radicals, and as Lutein behaves as an antioxidant it aid in limiting the oxidative damage.
If you are considering taking lutein to treat wet macular degeneration or aid in the prevention of AMD or are simply looking for a nutrient, which is powerful and will assist all around vision preservation, then lutein is a fantastic choice.

So, for instance, Kale has very high amounts of lutein, as does spinach.
However, you must eat large quantities in order to get a therapeutic dose.
The alternative in this course of action would be to juice the kale or spinach.
You could mix the kale or spinach with carrots and apples to make the resulting juice pleasant tasting.
Kale and spinach do not an unpleasant taste, however adding apple and carrots will make the drink taste better and they also add beneficial nutrients.
Juicing will allow for much greater amounts of Lutein to be consumed than eating alone.
The other alternative is supplementation.
Lutein supplements are a very helpful and useful method of achieving optimal levels.
Most lutein is derived from the marigold plant.
This plant, known for its brightly colored petals, has enormous quantities of lutein.
Supplemental lutein is a fine choice for anyone interested in preserving the quality of his or her vision.
