How to Dig a Trench With a Backhoe
- 1). Mark the outlines of the area where you plan to dig the trench with white spray paint. Move from one end to the other so the area is completely encased in the white spray paint.
- 2). Inspect the backhoe and check for broken or damaged parts before you begin using it. Look at the control levers and all the hydraulic hoses to verify they have not become excessively worn and are not leaking at any location.
- 3). Stick large stakes in each corner of the area you plan to excavate. Push the stakes into the ground. Check to ensure they are tall enough for you to see them clearly when using the backhoe which will prevent you from running over them and staying in the correct area when digging.
- 4). Read your backhoe safety and operations manual before operating the backhoe. Hop on the backhoe, and start it up. Driving it is similar to steering a car or forklift, but getting the hang of it will take practice. Move it to the location where you want to begin digging the trench.
- 5). Push down on the proper lever according to the manufacturer's instructions and dig the bucket into the ground. Drive forward and begin picking up dirt. Raise the lever, and toss the dirt aside. Lower the lever again, and repeat the same process. Continue digging until you have reached the desired depth in the first area.
- 6). Steer the backhoe forward, and dig out the next area in the same way you dug in the first area. Repeat the same process all the way down the enclosed area until you have dug a trench to your desired length.
