How to Run a Group for Grief & Bereavement
- 1). Assess the reasons or motivation for creating a grief and bereavement group. Determine why you feel strongly about helping others when faced with tough issues.
- 2). Form the grief and bereavement group with friends, family members and other loved ones who are also interested in the sessions. A solid group establishes membership to help when you need to recruit new members.
- 3). Write the topics you plan to cover and the goals for each meeting. Having an agenda and schedule for the group brings consistency and allows for the tracking of progress during sessions.
- 4). Create a website, blog or social networking page for your grief and bereavement group. Inform visitors of the services you offer, when you meet and how you can help handle tragedy.
- 5). Choose a meeting place. Call local rental halls and your city's community or recreational center to inquire about meeting places as your group grows.
- 6). Send newsletters and publications to remind the group's participants of upcoming meetings and topics to be covered. Call your group's members to give a vocal reminder the day before or the day of each meeting to help keep up attendance. Many members who are also struggling with the loss of a loved one may not have the motivation to attend group therapy or meetings, so it is important to stay in contact with those involved in your group.
