Ideas for a Musical Theatre Class
- One way for teachers to quickly get their students connected with the ideas and concepts of musical theatre is to visit a Broadway workshop. The Broadway theatre company offers a variety of classroom workshops that teachers can request to attend. These hands-on, interactive visits introduce students to Broadway shows and help them develop an appreciation for the theatre. If a teacher is taking her class to New York City to see a Broadway show, she can request that her students attend one of these workshops. The workshop will be based upon the show that the students are seeing, and give them the experience of a real Broadway rehearsal.
- Another aspect of musical theatre that is important for students to learn about and understand is multicultural performance. Have students study a play from a different culture, and ask them to find music that they would deem appropriate for that play. Each student should focus on his own play and music selection, then the class can vote on which play to perform in the end. Have the students work together to bring the multicultural musical theatre piece to life.
- Students interested in musical theatre need to learn to be comfortable performing in front of others. One assignment idea that teachers can use is to have students choose a song selection from one of their favorite musical performances. Encourage them to study and research musical theatre performances on their own, and figure out a favorite song from there. Then, students should perform a part of their song selection in front of the class. This will help them become more comfortable with performing.
- After spending several weeks teaching students the basics of musical theatre and explaining the importance of the various parts of musical theatre, a musical revue is a great final project. During the course of the class, have students build the foundation to perform in their own musical revue. A teacher can help to build the foundation by first having students perform acting warm ups, and then have them move on to vocal performances. Work to combine these talents until the class is ready to work on and perform a musical revue. The class should decide on their final performance together, and each student should play a role. Once the class is complete, have the students perform their revue for the rest of the school and parents as well.
