How to Make Hummingbird Feeder Mix
- 1). Pour two cups of boiling water in a large bowl. Add 1 cup sugar and stir to dissolve. (Undissolved sugar crystals are difficult to digest and may be harmful to hummingbirds.)
- 2). Add 2 cups cold water and stir to mix. Allow to cool completely.
- 3). Add several drops of red food coloring, if preferred. Although hummingbirds are attracted to red, coloring is not necessary and may even be harmful to hummingbirds. Choosing a red feeder provides a bright hummingbird feeder while eliminating the possible risks of food coloring.
- 4). Fill hummingbird feeders with the solution. Tip the feeder to the side to release any air bubbles. Air pockets prevent nectar from dispensing properly.
- 5). Hang in a shady location. The solution warms quickly in the summer sun. A little sun in the morning is fine, but avoid hanging in areas where direct afternoon sun shines directly on the feeder.
- 6). Store unused solution in a glass jar in the refrigerator and use within a week.
