How to Stain Cedar in Linwood Homes
- 1). Sprinkle the cedar wood with a few droplets of water. If the cedar wood absorbs the water quickly, then you don't need to sand it. If the droplets rest on the wood for 5 minutes or longer, you'll need to go on to Step 2.
- 2). Attach a piece of 100-grit sandpaper to the bottom of an electric sander and run it across the surface area of the cedar. Repeat with 220-grit sandpaper. Vacuum the area thoroughly to remove the dust from sanding.
- 3). Tape off the areas you don't plan on staining and cover other areas with a drop cloth. Dip a 3-inch nylon brush or a nap roller in the oil-based stain of your choice.
- 4). Apply a light layer of stain to the cedar and allow it to soak in for 20 minutes. Check the color. If you'd like it to be darker, add a second or even a third coat. Allow it to dry overnight.
- 5). Apply a light coat of oil-based sealer with a brush or roller. Allow it to dry for 24 hours.
