Improved Quality of Life With Pediatric Palliative Care
Improved Quality of Life With Pediatric Palliative Care
Finding evidence related to the PICO question started with a literature search in the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) and MEDLINE databases, and limited to articles written and published in English from 1999 to 2011. Combinations of the key words – pediatric, palliative care, quality of life, life-limiting illness, and evidence-based – were used to find pertinent articles. The authors also hand-searched the references of the retrieved articles for further relevant articles and consulted with the palliative care team and medical director. The search revealed over 40 articles with combinations of the key words. Most articles discussed quality of care and program development, but two studies examined how palliative care affects the quality of life of pediatric patients and their families. These two studies were critically appraised for evidence relating to the PICO question.
