What Religions Do Canadian People Practice?
- The Roman Catholic Church is actually quite popular in Canada, specifically in the French provinces. Many Catholics still practice openly in Canada and recruit new members all the time. The Catholic faith has contributed culturally in Canada and gives a good sense of unity within the provinces. Many French Canadians are Catholic, but there are concentrated communities of Catholics in the English provinces as well.
- This category refers to all non-Catholic Christian faiths that are practiced in Canada. They include Anglicans, Lutherans, Baptists and small concentrations of Amish. Although the largest concentration of Protestants are Anglican, none of the other Protestant churches can be discounted. Much like their French Catholic counterparts, Protestants are usually English speaking and concentrated in specific areas of the country.
- With the increase in immigrants arriving from India, Hinduism is rising in popularity in Canada. Hinduism is the national religion of India, but it also contributes to the Canadian communities where there are concentrations of immigrant Hindus in a specific area. This, along with Islam, is the fastest-growing religion in modern Canada.
- There is also a rise in immigrants from the Middle East, thereby increasing the numbers of Muslims in Canada. Much like the Hindus, their religious sects are thinly spread among the communities where there is a concentrated population in that area. Although there are some people who feel threatened by the religion of Islam after the 9/11 attacks, most people realize that this was done by extremists.
- During the last national census Canadian officials saw an increase in the number of residents who claim to not be a member of any church. This includes atheists, agnostics and people who don't consider themselves to be "religious."
