How to Design a Pool Area
- 1). Measure the size of your back yard and make a notation of the dimensions. Draw a basic schematic diagram, including any landmarks already in place, such as sheds or trees.
- 2). Measure and mark out where you want the pool installed, whether it will be an above-ground or in-ground pool. Mark the area with flags and make a notation of the measurements.
- 3). Measure and mark out where any patio, concrete or deck will be installed surrounding the pool. Mark the area with your flags and make a notation of the measurements. Research options for lighting your pool area and add to your diagram. If installing an above-ground pool, make sure you note where the stairs will be located. Be sure to also mark out where a fence will be installed around your pool.
- 4). Review your work and make necessary adjustments. Be sure to not only move the flags as needed, but make the changes to your jotted-down dimensions and schematic drawing as well.
- 5). Research with your local building permits office all necessary permits and requirements for installing a pool. Also check on local requirements for fencing height, distance from pool and locking mechanisms that may be required. Apply for the permits directly, or have your contractor do so on your behalf.
- 6). Decide where you would like any pool or patio furniture to be placed by your pool. Remember to plan for plenty of walking room around the pool. Also decide what kinds of shrubs or flowers you want in your yard. When determining placement, keep in mind that leaves or petals that come off nearby plants or trees will land in your pool. Keep large trees, or ones that may grow large, at least 10 feet away from your patio to help eliminate future damage to your concrete or patio area from the tree roots. Add these shrubs and plants to your schematic drawing.
- 7). Consult with your pool and patio builders to schedule installation dates, and be sure you have all necessary permits on site for the installation to begin.
- 8). Hire a company to install the required fence for your pool area.
- 9). Purchase and plant your shrubs and plants only after all the installations have been completed. Consult your drawing for exact placement of your plants and shrubs.
