While the Amazon Kindle has updated versions, there are still secrets that some people do not know, some secrets good and helpful, others bad for the consumer. Being aware of these can help you make an educated decision about whether or not you want to purchase the Kindle.

    Downloads

    • The download policy is a secret that Amazon does not readily advertise, especially with the new Kindle. The first version had memory that could be removed and another card put in, but the newer versions have built-in memory. This means you have to delete books to install new ones. While Amazon claims that you can redownload books as many times as you want, this isn't the case. They have a five or six download limit on some books, but it is not advertised.

    Web Browser

    • A good secret of the Kindle is that it has a web browser. This browser does not take up any extra battery power to use, unless you change the page. So, you can display a page of a map, for example, and leave it up without using any extra battery.

    Document Support

    • The Kindle does not support any type of document format except for the format books come in, which is a .AZW file. So, if you want to open a PDF or Word file on it, you need to convert it, which takes some time. The document can still be viewed, though, once it has been converted.

    Speech

    • The Kindle has a feature where it will read the text back to you. This means you can use it in your car to read your books to you, or any other place where it is difficult for you to read. It will read any of the books you have stored. This is a feature not many people are aware of, and therefore a secret.

    Backlight

    • The Kindle does not have a backlight which some users find frustrating, especially since other personal readers, like Sony's Reader, have this feature standard in all models. However, the absence of a backlight gives the battery a longer life. Also, some readers like the absence of a backlight because it is more like a book, as books aren't backlit.
