Palm M500 Troubleshooting

    Getting in Sync

    • One of the most common errors on the Palm M500 relates to synchronizing with HotSync. (It is important to note that the following steps will only work with HotSync software provided by Palm, according to kb.palm.com).

If when you press the HotSync button on the Palm a window opens on your desktop PC but fails before the process is finished, there are a few steps to try. Try to locate the proper driver, update to the latest Palm desktop or delete your current user name in favor of a new one. After each, try HotSync again.

If the HotSync window never opens on your PC after pressing the HotSync button, you will have to perform several steps, in order, according to Palm support.

First, update your Sync software. If you are using Windows Vista, you'll have to install the latest version of Palm Desktop. If you are using Microsoft Outlook 2007, download the outlook 2007 update (available through Palm support).

You should also make sure the HotSync Manager application is turned on, perform a soft reset of your device, disconnect the Palm M500 from the USB port and reconnect, or clean the connector of any debris with air.

    Other Trouble

    • Many problems can be triggered by lack of remaining memory space. To resolve this issue, consider moving files to an expansion card, delete unwanted applications, or purge old items such as your calendar or contacts list. You can also clear the cache in your web browser or delete old emails.

If your device doesn't appear to be charging, make sure it is securely connected. If that isn't the issue, Palm support recommends trying a soft reset, an option dubbed "the most useful trick in your toolbox for fixing a variety of issues." To perform a soft reset, use either an unfolded paper clip or the tip of a stylus and "gently press and release the "Reset" button inside the hole on the back panel of your device." If a soft reset does not solve your problem, a hard reset can be an option, though such a move will erase the data on the device.

Another common error is labeled "Error 1714. The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable," occurring most frequently when trying to install a newer version of Palm Desktop. To solve this error, use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, check that "Windows Installer Service is present and running properly on your PC," and, if necessary, edit the registry.
